Some random thoughts I’ve collected in my travels but have no good place to put….
The language is something I’m adjusting too and still get a big grin every time I figured out something new. You’ve heard about some of the words I can recognize but I was realizing the other day that I say hvala (thank you) to the people at the reception desk and people I’ve talked to without a second thought. Although, I still find myself defaulting to Spanish a lot. Apparently when I know the other person probably speaks a different language, my default not-English language is Spanish.
Our hotel is right at a rotary and observing the traffic here is a thing in and of itself. There don’t seem to be any rules governing right of way or lanes or anything like that. Yet, there hasn’t been a single crash. People seem to just move through it at high speeds, horns honking and no one gets hurt. Also, here the taxi’s park on the sidewalk and will just drive on and off, it’s a little unnerving to an unwary pedestrian. Pedestrians also have a bit of a paradox. If there is no walk/don’t walk signal, the only way to get cars to stop is to just start walking and the cars actually do stop. But, if there’s a signal, and the little red man is up, it’s a big no-no to cross and cars don’t seem quite as willing to stop.
The drive yesterday was beautiful, not sure if I stressed that enough, just countryside. The trees here are all types and I’ve been surprised by how much the plants are ones we’d find at home; some I know the name of and some I just recognize the plan itself. It seems like some of the trees we saw on the way might be citrus but it was hard to tell from the bus. The road was dotted with little farm stands on the side, most of which sold watermelons and peaches. The little towns all had the red roofs that I somehow find inexplicably adorable.
That’s it for random thoughts but I’m sure there’ll be more
